"THE VILLAGE" HISTORY
Florence Ellen Hummerston was a Western Australian who devoted her life to the interests of the people of the State. Her great contribution to public life still continues today and she will be remembered for her wit, vigilance, readiness to speak her mind fearlessly and be completely whole-hearted in everything she believed in.
She was largely instrumental in instigating the building of a hostel for people with disabilities. At the time, she was President of the Tuberculosis and Chest Association and worked tirelessly for the cause of rehabilitation of these people. We are proud that the Village bears her name.

The first stage of the Florence Hummerston Hostel, as it was then known at Bedbrook Place, Shenton Park was officially opened by Sir Charles Court on 31 March 1979. Florence Hummerston negotiated a substantial loan from the government at the time to instigate the building of this hostel.
