Competency development in areas such as options identification, informed choice/decision making and responsibility are incorporated into support relationship and by promoting socially valued roles. Personal development/training is supplemented through community resources such as assertiveness, advocacy and related TAFE courses.
At the service level, the consumer representative attends Senior Management meetings. Current information and circulars from management and consumer representatives are regularly posted on notice boards and available to all employees. Support personnel can be contacted for explanation/clarification.
Employees have rights and responsibilities and are encouraged to participate in electing and becoming committee representatives (e.g. Consumer Representatives and Occupational Safety and Health). Consumer Representatives Committee members are consumer elected for a two year term. New members will be shown how the committee works, and the roles and responsibilities of being an elected committee member representing employees will be explained/coached by experienced members.
The key role of an elected consumer representative is to discuss and address relevant issues or concerns with management and to give direct feedback to other employees (minutes of meetings posted on notice board and support is available for explanation/clarification). Consultation takes place within the specific committee, and when invited by committee members, support can be provided by personnel experienced in committee procedures and employee representation.
